The Rt Rev Stephen Edmund Verney MBE (17 April 1919 – 9 November 2009)〔Daily Telegraph Obituary p 37 Issue no 48,039 (dated 13 November 2009)〕 was the second Bishop of Repton from 1977 to 1985;〔(Derby Bishops )〕 and from then on an Assistant Bishop within the Diocese of Oxford. The son of Sir Harry Verney, 4th Baronet, he was born on 17 April 1919 and educated at Harrow 〔Who's Who 2008: London, A & C Black, 2008 ISBN 978-0-7136-8555-8〕 and Balliol College, Oxford. In 1947 he married Priscilla Schwerdt 〔The Times, Wednesday, 15 Oct 1947; pg. 7; Issue 50892; col C ''Marriages Mr SE Verney and Miss PAS Schwerdt''〕 and in 1950 was ordained an Anglican Priest. He began his career with a curacy at Gedling 〔Crockford's Clerical Directory2008/2009 Lambeth, Church House Publishing ISBN 978-0-7151-1030-0〕 after which he was: Priest in charge of St Francis Clifton, Nottingham; Vicar of Leamington Hastings ; ''Diocesan Missioner'' for the Diocese of Coventry then finally, before his elevation to the Episcopate, a Canon Residentiary at Windsor.
